[BNM] Vodafone Connect versus Vodafone Connect Lite (actually about modem compression)

When using a Vodafone 3G dongle, the images come through compressed; I
was always under the impression that this was something the networks
did at their gateway to reduce bandwidth. It appears this is actually
a feature of the modem driver...
I say this because in addition to jpegs being compressed, some
crunched javascript files were having some very important line-breaks
removed causing JS errors on web pages. A bit of Googling and I found
this comment:
"The vodafone mobile connect LITE software does not have the option to
disable the compression. Instead you need to download and install the
full version from here:
http://www.business.vodafone.com/site/bus/public/enuk/support/10_productsupport/laptop_connectivity/40_software/software/05_summary/p_summary.jsp
AND disable the composite device in device manager to prevent it
running the 'lite" version every time you plug in the dongle."
So I uninstalled the Lite software, installed the full version and
then edited the modem properties; turning off hardware compression and
got uncrunched jpegs and working javascript files. Am I dreaming or
does this actually sound plausible? Would modem hardware compression
affect jpegs and other files in this way?
