[BNM] AdWords Conversion Tracking

Hi

A site I am working with has a need to track Google AdWord conversions that are links to word docs and pdfs (i.e. no pageviews). At first I thought best to redirect the links to a download script which would handle the download and host the conversion code but it transpires most of the links are to docs stored on other domains (also owned by the client) - I found a purported hack [1] to trigger conversion code with onclick events in the links but it doesn't appear to work on a test I am doing (i.e. Google is not registering my test conversions) - does anyone know of a tried and tested method for doing this? Or should we resort to using an interim pageview for target downloads (not very user friendly)?
