[BNM] Contacts database

I'm looking into the best way to manage a new contacts database (which
will be quite large) for a start-up. Does anyone have any top tips? The
last big databases I've seen used for this have been Filemaker (which...
yuck?), Now Contact (haha!) and Access (best of a bad bunch, maybe). I'd
like to do better for this one.

What are peoples thoughts on an online database? Are there any open source
front ends with a MySQL database or anything that people have used? My
googling hasn't brought up any non-sponsored results, but I figure someone
on BNM must have experience in this...
