Thanks for asking Olly.
The thing about nuke power, is that the degree of damage that they do if
they fuck up is huge... so anywhere in Southern England would
essentially be on my doorstep... if say, it did a Chernobyl, and if I
lived in Southern England.
Personally I think they're very bad Systems Design. They lack resilience
- against natural disasters, man made disasters and changing technology.
In addition to this, systems where electricity needs to travel huge
distances is incredibly wasteful... for example, with the current UK
system about 60% of the energy created goes straight up as heat.
The best option at the moment is looking like small CHP systems similar
to the ones used in Scandinavia, Holland... and Woking weirdly enough.
I've heard that moves are afoot to set them up in London as well - Ken
Livingston was looking into it, though I'm not sure what the status of
that is.
It takes about a year (as opposed to ten) to build a CHP station, they
can take a variety of fuels, they're a LOT more efficient, you don't
wind up with toxic waste that costs a billion £ a year to store... and
if part of the system goes down, the rest of it isn't affected. In
addition to all this, decentralized power allows for swappable
modules... so if/when a better technology turns up, you're not stuck
with the old monolithic ones for the next 50 years.
So that's what I think.
Really doorstep or not isn't that much of an issue. This is my planet. I
don't care where they are.
