Yes true but most children want to ‘fit in’ with the crowd rather than be
different. If the majority of people in the class are disruptive or don’t
want to learn then I think it makes it harder for that child to go against
the tide. I’m sure not all comprehensive classes are like that but I’ll
guarantee the odds favouring the public school group. I also believe there’s
a lot more discipline in private schools, tradition, isolation and parents
expectations still gives their teachers some powers to control the kids.
Anyway I only have my own experiences to go on. My parents could only afford
to send me and my brother to private school, my two younger sisters went
through the comprehensive system. There is a marked difference between us in
terms of world view/education. Both my sisters left school with a handful of
GCSE’s/GNVQ’s and have worked in secretarial fields, my brother ended up
getting a distinction from Oxford/PHD and can literally choose any job he
wants. I’ve always found that interesting as we came from the same
family/background. I know my parents regret not being able to send all of us
through the public system.

Well maybe. You don’t tend to learn ‘street smarts’ going through the public
system. I’d argue though that a good education opens a lot of doors. Our
industry is new and fairly progressive, you can get a long way with ‘hands
on’ skills but I’m willing to bet if we looked at those people in top paying
professions (lawyers/barristers/CEOs/Doctors), a larger percentage of them
came from the public school system.
Now I’m abroad I’ll probably be sending my kids to an international/private
school but I’d certainly consider a state school here in Russia. They still
have a strong emphasis on maths/science/languages, small class sizes and are
deeply respectful of teachers, who are free enough to keep discipline in the
classroom. The kids here are reading Pushkin, Shakespeare and other classics
by the age of 10! I think we could learn a lot about the school systems of
these ‘developing’ countries, they still seem to retain qualities we lost
years ago.
