Hi,
>>> The teachers also have to work at the lowest common denominator. I was
bored out of my head most of the time with no one to stretch me
academically.
Yes, this is true - but there are ways around this - streaming and setting
can get round this problem.
It's a long-term game. If you start to get kids achieving at many schools
they become more attractive to the cream of the teachers too....

Sorry don’t agree with that Alan
Having actually been the ‘brighter’ one in a classroom full of idiots, you
don’t nobly educate the rest. Usually you keep very quiet as the peer
consensus does not look too favourably on the ‘clever/geeky’ ones. The
teachers also have to work at the lowest common denominator. I was bored out
of my head most of the time with no one to stretch me academically.
I ended up having to have private lessons to take me to an acceptable level
for public school exams. It was a revelation when I got in there though –
everyone actually wanted to learn and being clever became socially
acceptable. Totally different environment. I know you can argue the higher
pay brings better teachers but a lot of it comes down to the peer group.
IMHO all this policy will do is bring schools down to the same level. I
suppose though that is New Labours idea of equality.
Anyway I think the middle class kids are more likely to leave the state
system altogether. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this policy was
contributing to the current boom in the private school sector. More children
are in the public school system than at any other time.

parents.
Yeah it would be nice if some of the Labour Ministers who brought in these
rules actually put their own children into the system they create. Shows a
lot of faith doesn’t it?
