NEW NUCLEAR POWER STATION NEAR OXFORD ' A DISASTER WAITING TO HAPPEN' -
WARNS EURO-MP

OXFORDSHIRE'S Green Party MEP Caroline Lucas has warned that secret
Government plans to build a new nuclear power station near Oxford are a
disaster waiting to happen - and predicted a vociferous campaign of
non-violent direct action to fight the proposal.

Dr Lucas, reacting to reports that the Government had identified sites
including Harwell, near Didcot, and the south coast near Brighton, said:

"I am appalled to learn of secret plans to site a new nuclear power station
in Oxfordshire.

"Building nuclear power stations anywhere is dirty, dangerous and expensive.
Contrary to the Government's protestations, over their full life cycle
nuclear power generates considerable CO2 emissions - and, crucially, it
diverts investment away from renewable alternatives.

"But is also increases the likelihood of a terrorist attack or a devastating
Chernobyl-style accident. Of course that would be a disaster if it happened
anywhere, but the destruction and loss of life that would follow any such
incident just a few miles outside Oxford, one of the most densely-populated
areas of the region, doesn't even bear thinking about."

The MEP warned that the Government could face a wave of local protests
making the construction of any new nuclear facilities difficult and
expensive, adding:

"The Government might have circumvented local participation in major
planning decisions relating to new power stations in its Planning White
Paper published on Monday, but if democratic routes of objecting to these
proposals are closed off then we can expect a campaign of non-violent direct
action on a scale perhaps never before seen.

"The hundreds of thousands of people directly threatened by these plans will
make their voice heard, by whatever peaceful means are necessary, and I, for
one, will be joining them."
