[BNM] [OT] 350D lens hood (was: Cheap digital SLR camera recommendations)

Quick question as I know there are quite a few photographers on the list...

Is it worth putting a lens hood on a zoom lens (350D with 18-55mm
lens)? Or is it pointless because it would have to allow for the whole
focal length range from 18mm to 55mm and therefore not much use in
preventing flare?
