You could use data URLs to embed images.  I'm not sure if that would
fix the problem with most email clients not displaying them though (It
would also dramatically increase your bandwidth usage if sending bulk
email (and also, perhaps, the annoyance of the people you're
emailing)).  I'm not sure of the actual details.
