Not sure if it's still true but whatever was available as download for X11 
(apple site) was wrong for the intel macbooks. I had to install it from the 
DVD that came with my macbook pro (intel). I had exactly the same error and 
the DVD version sorted it out i.e. it wasn't installed but was on the DVD 
and worked fine.
