Hi there
Canon 400D, Canon 350D, Nikon D50, Nikon D80 -- all good cameras, as you'll
see by their "highly recommended" scores on DPReview.
General view is that the Nikons have better build quality (bit less
plastick-y), and the Canons just have the edge in image quality.
There's been some "scare" stories about the Nikon D80's tendancy to
overexpose -- might be worth check out the lastest on that if you're tempted
by that one (hard to keep up with all the people testing their cameras to
death on DPreview).
One thing to bear in mind about the Nikon D40 (new and pretty cheap) is that
there are a limited range of lenses that it works with.
I use the Nikon D70 - getting on a bit now but the D70s/D70 is still a good
camera. I've printed 30 by 20 inch prints to exhibition standard (with some
fiddling around with the files) from this 6 megapixel SLR (exhibtion details
below, but it's in Bracknell!), so don't think you necessarily have to go
for a 10 megapixel model.
If physical size is important, the Olympus E400 is quite a bit smaller (well
thinner) than most models of SLR, but hasn't been reviewed on DPReview. A
couple of mag reviews I saw seemed OK.
