Depends what you are like with blood and guts. Anime like Akira and
Ghost in the Shell are really violent.

Although I do really recommend Akira - there has never been a finer
anime made. Do NOT buy Steam Boy - it's rubbish.

Absolutely anything by Miyazaki - Princess Mononoke is a MUST. Stuff
by Studio Ghibli (Miyazaki's studio) is usually great, but made more
for the family. Whilst I studied in Japan I was addicted to Ghibli
films - they really told a lot about life out there.

The Ghost in the Shell films are all well and good, but the two series
are much much better. It's called Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone
Complex.

There's loads of early 90s classics such as 3x3 Eyes and Patlabor -
but these tend to be dark and may seem dated (but I still like them).

The best modern anime series I have watched recently suitable for
sensitive kids/young-teens was Last Exile. Watch it in Japanese though
with subs otherwise your ears will bleed with the appalling voice overs.

Stay Away from anime series' such as Naruto and Bleach otherwise
you'll never see your kid again! Also generally they are full of crap
(although Naruto's quite good sometimes :-).
