Thanks Tom. I'm glad you've had recent successes - it means the candidates
are still out there and still using Wired Sussex.

Whether to declare salary ranges or not is an interesting debate. We're
currently trying both options on different adverts.

We had some really good candidates for our recent round of developer hiring
so it's working for us. There is a war for talent going on though so no
matter where you advertise you have to work extra hard to persuade the best
people to work for you. Make sure you really sell your company and the
benefits of working for you in the job ad and not just talk about what YOU
want. The folks at Wired Sussex are really helpful if an advert isn't
working for you. Just drop them a line and they'll see if they can make some
suggestions.

Another tip: It's very common to advertise a salary as 'Dependent on
experience', but this can put off a lot of candidates, particularly in an
industry like ours where there are a lot of smaller employers who aren't
paying the market rate. Great candidates aren't short of companies to apply
to so show them that you're serious by giving the salary range, however wide
that might be. I suspect that the fear is that if you give a salary range,
candidates will naturally ask for the top end, however your recruitment
process should be thorough enough to gauge how good someone is so you can
then make them an offer commensurate with their ability and market rates.

You can try the jobs board at www.sussexdigital.com - I think they're still
offering free placements, however I'm not sure how many people would be
looking at this jobs board and not Wired Sussex which is the established
leader locally.

T.

We at Sigmer use the Wired Sussex job board extensively and have done
successfully for a number of years, but recently we're having trouble with
the volume and quality of candidate responses. Are others finding this? Is
there a change in the recruitment climate? Or are there now other job boards
that software developers and new media types now use in preference?
