It is a new engine, not an upgrade. The full retail price is £35.
Incidentally, I don't know how EA get away with charging £35 for a
download when you can buy the same product on DVD for £10 less?

Unfortunately it doesn't. The support for finding other players is
pretty poor. You can use www.bf2s.com to see if players are online,
and their rankings (if they have over 100 points):
